Stabilization of a massive disc herniation T12/L1 and segmental instability with posterior fixator

PD Dr. med. Erich Kast Neurosurgeon and Specialist in Interventional Pain Therapy, Inpatient Physician of the Hirslanden Hospitals, Zürich, Switzerland (Created in 2014)

Standing X-ray postoperatively with excellent implant position of T11-L2 with interbody spondylodesis T12/L1

Symptoms
A 78-year-old female patient complained of major pain in the left hip and leg as well as significant left hip flexion weakness.

Diagnosis
Using diagnostic imaging procedures, relevant coxarthrosis was able to be ruled out. The MRI of the lumbar spine showed massive degeneration of the entire lumbar spine with spontaneous fusion of L1/L2, degenerative anterolisthesis of T12/L1 with massive disc herniation, sequestered cranially to the left. Significant spinal cord compression and foraminal stenosis of T12 on the left were seen as a result of this. Due to the pain symptoms that were not able to be controlled, the patient preferred a rapid surgical intervention.
